"Variety is the spice of life."
Anyone who has experienced the "one size fits all" approach can surely appreciate variety. Variety is the spice of life! But with the technology of today, are we getting too many spices in the mix? Are the cupboards at capacity because we have way too many spices? I have an interesting theory as to why having too many options is not always the best.
When you have have one size fits all or little to no other options, you don't need a lot of time to make a decision. You get option A or option B or nothing at all. Simple. Economics and marketing shows that the time to make a decision also based on the size of the purchase, but we will save that discussion for later. The point here is that there is less time needed to make the decision because you overall have less to analyze, and you make decisions faster. But does that mean that this was the best solution?T hat's the question that consumers were asking when both option A and option B were not exactly desirable.
Analytical minds don't simply take one of the options given, they search for the optimal option. As a result of companies wanting to be more marketable to the analytical consumer, more options were produced. When being an analyst in your natural state of being this is where options can become somewhat of an issue. Many of my friends tell me that I over think, and often times I would agree. My analytical nature wants to deeply evaluate each and every option. Even though that is a great skill to have it can be a downside if not contained. By contained, I mean a definiteness of purpose. When you don't really know what you want, any product will do because you're really just making a guess and at the wimp of the sales person. Technology helps to counter the unwise purchase since you can look up seemingly endless information at any given point in time. Yet again, you're diving into all this information spending more time analyzing the myriad of options. In this day and age, there are options for everything single thing. You can personalize your settings with pinpoint precision on so many tools. While I appreciate the technological advances just as much as the next, I have to ask, "Do we really need that many options for everything that we use?" I think not.
Every business's goal should be supply the customers with what they want. Today's economics isn't so much based on being the best product, but instead creating a relationship. Companies created many different options in efforts to "divide and conquer" the market.
There is nothing wrong with companies trying to breakdown the market and serve all their different consumers. And there is nothing wrong with being a critical thinker who looks for best solution. My word of advice is that sometimes when you know what you want and have definiteness of purpose with your desires, you can make quick decisions and choose the correct option for yourself. Greatness is not stumbled upon. Greatness is not guess work and it most certainly is not just settling for what is given. Allow everyday to be an opportunity for your vision to gain clarity, and make it a reality. Work so that you don't have to take options; but instead where YOU are the one who give people options. Are you #Geared4Greatness or are you comfortable being still? These are the options, I present to you!
